Controlling Shadows and render passes behind glass

I would like to render a watch WITH the glass. The issue I always face is that everything behind the glass is not controllable via render passes. the Clown Layer doesn’t work, Shadow passes don’t work and render layers don’t work. Am I missing something?

It is almost impossible to get nice drop shadows of the hands on the dial, while nicely lighting out the dial. So what I would love to do, is to render one picture with intense drop shadows and one picture with a evenly light dial and then combine them in photoshop.

Is there away to his?

this is a techincal issue with refraction. its always been an issue and not an easy one to solve. Right now clown passes are dealing with the materials as they are applied, not as they appear. This is not just a problem in KS but other DCC’s that I’ve seen.
